Basic concepts of power connectors

The variety of DC power line connectors on the market reflects their many differences in construction, orientation, and purpose. Some connectors can resist physical damage caused by water, shock, or vibration; others can only tolerate a limited number of connections and disconnections before they may fail. We distinguish power connectors by duration of connection (temporary or permanent), location of the conductive interface (male or female), type of current (alternating or direct) and method of assembly and disassembly.


Power connector construction

For a DC power line connector to perform its function correctly, it must have the correct pin arrangement. The pin arrangement is the connection arrangement that each connector can make within the circuit. Each wire is connected to the corresponding contact or pin in the connected part.  The wires may have different uses and characteristics. Connector manufacturers use several different methods to make these wire connections, such as 1. soldering. 2. piercing or moving the insulation around the contacts. 3. winding the wire. The selection of the proper connection method depends on the termination of the connector. Terminating exposed pins is just enough to complete a circuit, but not enough to create a dangerous connection that is easily damaged by normal use or maybe accidentally disconnected.

Jack: A female connector that receives a pin or blade to complete a circuit.

Blade: A flat, conductive metal piece that fits inside the blade socket to complete the circuit.

Pin: A male conductive cylinder that is mounted in a jack as part of a connection.

Receptacle: A socket or connection receptacle, usually the least mobile part of a connector.

Plug: A terminal that may contain multiple jacks, pins, or inserts. The plug is inserted into the receptacle.
